Leo J. Powell is an entrepreneur, poet, visionary thinker, and transformational writer whose journey with poetry began in an extraordinary way. Born and raised in Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago, Leo discovered his connection to poetry all his life, and, at the age of eighteen, he began receiving what he describes as “downloads” — deep moments of inspiration that brought forth thoughts, ideas, and reflections — far beyond his years and physical life experiences at the time.
As a young man, Leo found himself writing poetry that explored themes of identity, personal freedom, consciousness, purpose, love, and the human experience. His early work, including the powerful poem I Am My Only Freedom, written at the age of eighteen, revealed a depth of introspection and wisdom that challenged the boundaries of age and circumstance. Through his writing, Leo began exploring the inner journey of self-discovery and the search for meaning that connects all people.
Over the years, these inspired writings continued to flow, creating a collection of reflections on moments of awakening, resilience, and transformation. His writings serve as an invitation to look beyond the external world and reconnect with the quiet wisdom, strength, and potential we all have within.
Beyond his work as a writer, Leo dedicated twenty years of his professional life to serving the United Nations, an experience that exposed him to diverse cultures, global challenges, and the shared hopes and struggles of humanity. This journey strengthened his understanding of the interconnectedness of people and deepened his commitment to using words and reflections as a means of inspiration and positive change.
Leo’s gift for poetry has been recognized internationally. In celebration of the first anniversary of September 11, he entered a global UN Staff poetry competition featuring more than 1,500 submissions and was selected as the winner. His award-winning poem ‘September 11’ reflected his ability to capture profound human emotions and transform personal reflection into a message that resonates universally.
